Tena koe - thanks for dropping by! Here's some info about me, and the way I work.
I work in independent practice as a Clinical Family Therapist, where I provide therapy for families, couples, and individuals. I work in a somewhat different way to what is offered by other approaches, such as psychotherapy, psychology or counselling, which are more likely to focus on the client's thoughts and behaviours and will be more attuned to the individual.
Family Therapists are more interested in the relational and contextual aspects of clients lives, as humans are all systemic, relational beings. What this means is that we are born into families that shape us and influence us throughout the course of our lives and we often go on to create our own couple relationships, and our own families. These are often the most central and significant parts of our lives - what we bring to these relationships, and what we receive from them is huge. Systemic Family Therapists will always be mindful of these factors, regardless of the issues that their clients bring in the door.
I trained in this approach in Melbourne many years ago and I'm still pretty energised by it all, even though family therapy has never developed to the same extent in New Zealand, as it has in Australia and other countries. So in addition to running a busy therapy practice, I also mentor and supervise other therapists who want to work in this way, and I've taught this approach to the staff of health boards, private organisations, and at a post-graduate level for Canterbury & Otago Universities.
In my therapy practice over the last couple of decades I've worked alongside hundreds of families, couples and individuals to reach some good outcomes, and to see them move on with the next phase of their lives. I have a good track record for working in a relaxed, friendly and collaborative way, which helps clients begin to make positive changes after just a few meetings. I use evidence-based approaches, and I'm committed to my own on-going professional development.
If you have read this far, great! You might be interested in checking out some of my observations about a range of topics relating to our important relationships. You can also pick up some pointers on how to do these better, over at: News From The Therapy Room.
